People in Tohoku love instant noodles – that’s the latest finding from a government survey of household spending on the products, which placed all six prefectural capitals in the region in the national top 10 for instant noodle consumption in 2023.
This is the seventh time in the past decade that all capital cities in the region have ranked in the top 10 nationwide, and spending on instant noodles in Tohoku cities is far above the national average, according to the annual survey published in February by the Interior and Ministry of Communications.
The ministry conducts monthly and annual surveys of about 9,000 households with two or more people in the 52 prefectural capitals and cities designated by the ordinance. The surveys include household income and expenditure per item.
