Tokyo court rejects claim over 3-ply toilet paper

TOKYOAug 22 (News On Japan) – The Tokyo District Court has sentenced Nippon Paper Crecia and dismissed Daio Paper’s claim of patent infringement in a lawsuit over a specific type of toilet paper technology. Nippon Paper Crecia, known for its “Scottie” brand, had filed the lawsuit against Daio Paper, the company behind the “Elleair” brand, to stop production of certain products.

The dispute revolved around Nippon Paper Crecia’s patented technology, which makes a single roll of toilet paper last three times longer while remaining soft. The company argued that the 3.2-ply rolls it sells from Daio Paper were a direct copy of its product.

However, the Tokyo District Court dismissed the claims in its ruling on 21 this month. According to the court, there was no infringement of Nippon Paper Crecia’s patent rights.

Seiji Hamahata, head of intellectual property at Daio Paper, noted: “Such product categories should not be monopolized by one company; instead, all companies should work together to stimulate the market. Unfortunately, Nippon Paper Crecia seems to have a different perspective.”

Nippon Paper Crecia, on the other hand, expressed its displeasure over the ruling, saying it is “completely unacceptable” and that it plans to appeal the decision.
