Japan’s Yui Susaki lost her first match in the women’s 50 kilogram freestyle wrestling 2-3 to India’s Vinesh Vinesh, thus failing to win a gold medal in two consecutive Olympic Games.
The 25-year-old Tokyo gold medalist could advance to a repechage if Vinesh makes it to the final.
After the match she said in a TV interview: “It wasn’t just my dream [to win gold]. There were a lot of family and friends in the room, and I feel sorry for them. I can’t believe it’s over.”
