A group of Tokyo residents said Wednesday they plan to block construction of a massive logistics and data center planned by Singaporean developer GLP, a worrying sign for companies looking to Japan to meet growing demand.
The petition by more than 220 residents of the western Tokyo city of Akishima follows a successful attempt in December in Nagareyama, Chiba Prefecture, to thwart a similar plan for a data center.
Akishima residents feared the center would threaten wildlife, cause pollution, spike electricity consumption and deplete the water supply, which consists entirely of groundwater.
