Typhoon increases rice shortage in Japan, affects harvest

IBARAKIAugust 31 (News about Japan) – The arrival of Typhoon No. 10 has increased concerns among Japanese farmers, especially those who have just started their new rice harvest.

In Ibaraki Prefecture, where fields stretch as far as the eye can see, many rice plants were blown over by the storm.

One farmer explained: “Koshihikari is a variety that is prone to lodging, and last night’s rain caused them to fall like this. When the plants fall over due to high temperatures and humidity, the grains can start to germinate while still on the stalk, which can seriously reduce their quality and make them unfit for consumption.”

This yearโ€™s warm weather had actually stimulated growth, and harvest had just begun when the typhoon struck. Attempts to speed up harvest before the rains came were only partially successful, with only 20% of the harvest completed so far.

Minister Sakamoto expressed his concern, saying, “Typhoon No. 10 is expected to have a significant impact on agriculture, forestry and fisheries. We urge consumers to remain calm as new rice supplies enter the market.”

However, the government’s assurance that the rice shortage will end with the new harvest may be premature, as it will take longer to harvest the wet and fallen rice plants, potentially leading to delays in deliveries.
