Unusual heat in Japan raises chance of extreme heat stroke warning

Although it is still officially the rainy season, temperatures in many places in Japan on Monday exceeded 37 degrees Celsius, raising the possibility that the government could issue a special heat stroke warning at any time.

At 2 p.m. on Monday, an observation point in the city of Shingu, Wakayama Prefecture, recorded 39.6 C (103.2 F), the highest temperature ever recorded in the city, while a spot in Fuchu, western Tokyo, saw the mercury climb to 39.2 C (103.3 F), also an all-time record high. Several other places, from Mie to Chiba to Ibaraki to Saitama, recorded temperatures of over 37.5 C (100.4 F).

The Meteorological Agency classifies days with temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius as โ€œextremely hot days.โ€
