Although it is still officially the rainy season, temperatures in many places in Japan on Monday exceeded 37 degrees Celsius, raising the possibility that the government could issue a special heat stroke warning at any time.
At 2 p.m. on Monday, an observation point in the city of Shingu, Wakayama Prefecture, recorded 39.6 C (103.2 F), the highest temperature ever recorded in the city, while a spot in Fuchu, western Tokyo, saw the mercury climb to 39.2 C (103.3 F), also an all-time record high. Several other places, from Mie to Chiba to Ibaraki to Saitama, recorded temperatures of over 37.5 C (100.4 F).
The Meteorological Agency classifies days with temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius as โextremely hot days.โ
