US lawmakers meet Tibetan Dalai Lama and warn China over choice of successor

A group of US lawmakers who met exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama in India on Wednesday said they would not allow China to influence the choice of his successor. These comments are expected to anger Beijing as it calls him a separatist.

They also indicated that Washington would pressure Beijing to hold talks with Tibetan leaders, which have been stalled since 2010, to resolve the Tibet issue with a bill that President Joe Biden is expected to sign soon.

The bipartisan group of seven, led by Michael McCaul, a Republican representative from Texas who is also chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, met the Nobel Peace Prize laureate at his monastery in the northern city of Dharamsala.
