Republican lawmakers in the US have asked President Joe Biden’s administration for an intelligence review of Microsoft’s $1.5 billion investment in UAE-based artificial intelligence company G42, amid concerns about the transfer of sensitive technology and G42’s historical ties to China.
Reps. Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and John Moolenaar, leader of the China Committee, made the request for a briefing in a Wednesday letter to Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, the committees said.
Republicans said they want the briefing on the deal, announced in April, before it moves to a second phase involving the transfer of export-restricted semiconductor chips and model weights, advanced data that allows an AI model to better mimic human reasoning.
