As the world’s first and most famous virtual idol, there’s a futuristic, high-tech aspect to many of Hatsune Miku’s endeavors. The Vocaloid has also shown herself to be adept at collaborating with creators of traditional art forms, as we’ve seen in her my son woodcuts of dolls and ukiyo-e.
For her next project, Miku will take to the stage not to do an idol dance, but to perform a kabuki play.
“Hanakurabe Zenbonzakura” is a kabuki performance inspired by both the classic kabuki story “Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura” and Hatsune Miku’s iconic song “Senbonzakura” (senbonzakura which means โ1,000 cherry blossom treesโ). While kabuki performances are often one-star productions, for โHanakurabe Zenbonzakuraโ Miku will share the stage with gifted kabuki actor Shido Nakamura.
Miku and Nakamura have been collaborating regularly on temporary Cho-Kabuki productions (as their collaborations are called) since 2016, most recently in Tokyo in 2023 and Kyoto in 2019. They have announced that they will reunite at the upcoming Expo 2025 World’s Fair in Osaka for an updated version of the play, titled “Hanakurabe Zenbonzakura Expo 2025 Version.”
โผ According to this report from last year’s Tokyo performance, the technology used isn’t completely pre-programmed, but rather allows Miku to respond to her fellow players’ improvisations in real time.
“Hanakurabe Zenbonzakura Expo 2025 Version” is scheduled to be performed on May 24 and 25. Details about ticket/seat reservations have not yet been announced.
