Weak yen slows recovery in summer foreign travel

The weak yen, now at a record low, is slowing the recovery of overseas travel during the summer holidays, according to estimates released Thursday by JTBJapan’s largest travel agency.

The number of travelers going abroad between July 15 and August 31 is expected to increase slightly, an increase of just 1% from last year and a recovery to around 65% of pre-pandemic levels, the survey said.

The JTB survey shows that short trips to nearby destinations such as South Korea and Taiwan are still popular, but this year there has also been an increase in the number of travellers taking longer trips to destinations further afield.
