TOKYOMay 18 (NHK) – A next-generation vertical take-off and landing aircraft took to Tokyo’s airspace for the first time on Friday.
The “flying car” took off from a parking lot at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center in Koto Ward.
Spectators took photos and videos of the craft as it reached a height of about 33 feet and circled.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has organized a series of events since April to highlight the role of cutting-edge technologies in the capital’s future.
The single-seat aircraft was developed by an American company. It measures 4.5 meters wide and 2.6 meters high.
Officials said the vessel can reach a maximum speed of about 100 km/h. It can stay in the air for about 15 minutes.
The flying event will be held a total of seven times at the same location until Thursday.
