The Canadian Labour Council on Saturday ordered striking rail workers back to work and ordered binding arbitration to resolve labour disputes at two major freight carriers that threatened to disrupt the North American economy.
Strikes began Thursday morning at both Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), locking out nearly 10,000 Teamsters union workers.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government moved quickly to end the strikes and refer the disputes to the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) for arbitration.
