Honda nears deal with Canada to increase electric vehicle capacity

Canada is on the verge of a deal with Honda Motor that will see the company build electric vehicles and their components in the province of Ontario, people familiar with the matter said.

The deal, expected to be announced within a week, includes a multibillion-dollar commitment by Honda for new facilities for processing cathode-active materials, building batteries and assembling battery-powered vehicles โ€“ bringing southern Ontario will become a key hub of the company’s EV production plans in North America. The Canadian government would subsidize part of the capital costs.

Honda has a factory in Alliston, Ontario, about an hour’s drive north of Toronto, that manufactures Honda CR-V and Civic models. The company makes hybrid vehicles at plants in Ohio and Indiana, according to its website, and plans to produce its first all-electric U.S.-made vehicles in Marysville, Ohio, next year.
