New JAL head worries about yen’s ‘excessive’ weakness

The continued decline in the yen against the U.S. dollar in recent weeks has been “excessive,” raising concerns that it would discourage outbound travel from Japan, especially among younger Japanese travelers, Japan Airlines’ new CEO said.

“The weakening of the yen doesn’t seem to be letting up, and we are quite concerned,” Mitsuko Tottori, who became JAL‘s first female CEO on April 1, said during an interview with the media on Wednesday.

The yen fell past the closely watched level of ¥155 against the dollar to a new 34-year low on Thursday, fueling speculation that the government could intervene soon.
