The presence of the approximately 2 million fans who will travel from abroad to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be felt in the city’s stadiums. Unfortunately, it will also be felt in the climate.
According to Olympic organizers, about a quarter of the carbon emissions associated with hosting the world’s largest sporting event come from spectator travel.
Itโs a long-standing problem that didnโt arise at the Paris Olympics. But the Paris Games, like those that have come before them, have embraced sustainability as a core principle. Along the way, it has made good progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with the construction and operation of venues. But it has done little to address emissions from overseas spectators.
