Tokyo students stand firm against tuition increases

TOKYOJune 15 (News On Japan) – In response to the issue of possible tuition increases at several national universities, including the University of Tokyo, students have organized protests and petitioned the government expressing their strong opposition.

Students from the University of Tokyo said, “As the only ones who can raise our voices at this time, we must address the issue of tuition increase sincerely, taking future students into account. We strongly oppose tuition increases that unfairly distort students’ career choices.”

The students held a press conference at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, warning that if tuition fees were increased at the University of Tokyo, it could have a domino effect on other universities.

An on-campus survey found that more than 90% of respondents were against the tuition increase.

In addition, a meeting of national university students and teachers was held at the House of Representatives office building, where they petitioned the government requesting an increase in operating subsidies.

University of Tokyo President Teruo Fujii plans to hold a talk with students on the 21st. He says: ‘We will listen to views from both inside and outside the university and assess the situation carefully.’
